Empty nesters adapting to evolving Christmas

Chicago Tribune
by Joan Cary
December 07, 2011

Joan Kaufman, designer and owner of Interior Planning and Design in Naperville, said many empty-nester parents lessen the stress of decorating by switching to a 6-foot, pre-lit, artificial tree. She suggests that if you have the space, don’t undress it after the holidays. Bag it and put it in the basement or a closet for next year when you can “fluff it up.” Some people will also hire her or other designers to do the decorating for them.

“The hardest part is when you are in the in-between stage,” she said. “You are still in that big house but the kids who helped decorate it have gone off to do their own thing.”

She recommends using pre-lit garland for decorating because it is warming and easy to use.

Feng Shui in the office — isn’t it just interior design?

Chicago Office Commercial

Summer 2011

Using every avenue to foster your business success, especially in today’s marketplace, is good marketing. Creating a work environment that helps you grow your business is more than planning it to be spatially efficient and functional, more than designing the space to have visual impact and appeal, more than selecting the right carpet, furnishings and paint, more than designing the correct lighting levels and heating/cooling comfort; even more than carefully calibrating the environment to include sustainable materials with energy efficient systems.

Designers find other ways to be of service. A friend introduced Joan Kaufman of Interior Planning & Design, Inc., in Naperville to Metro Achievement Center, a tutoring center in Chicago.

Kaufman helped with space planning and ways to arrange the rooms. She recommended folding tables that connect to each other so the rooms could be used for different functions.

“I helped select the tables so they would be more durable and multifunctional, work well and be comfortable and last a long time. They don’t have a huge budget. It needs to be tasteful, last a long time and look professional,” said Kaufman.

“The parents and students need to have confidence, and the students have to be motivated to be there, and the environment is important to the success of the students and to the teachers who donate them to help.”

Most children, it seems, get three different bedroom designs over the course of their growing-up years, according to Joan Kaufman of Interior Planning and Design Inc. of Naperville and president of the Illinois Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers.

Sports, soccer to be exact, were also the theme Jane Zaeske’s daughter wanter in her room, decorated last year by Kaufman.

“I hired a designer because I know what I like, but I just can’t seem to put it all together in a room. I wanted something that was affordable, looks organized and cleans up well,” Zaeske said.

“We saw a comforter we liked and Joan Kaufman worked on the room from there, using my daughter’s favorite color of blue,” she explained. “She did everything with paint and stencil and some wall appliqués and the result is awesome. It is very simple and not overdone.”

“It is girlish with a touch of tomboy, which fits her personality,” Zaeske added.

Recently, interior designer Joan Zeaske Kaufman ’85 FAA, ’85 ACES helped make over one of these aging grand dames- Alpha Gamma Delta, a castle-like house on Lincoln Avenue, there she herself lived as a sorority sister during her time at Illinois. Choose antique and know where to put it at fair

Kaufman believes that antiques can be fabulous signature pieces that can add a “wow” to any room. Kaufman suggests, rather than packing a room full of antiques, have antiques interspersed among other pieces — perhaps an antique side table or console in a family room or a piece used in a foyer or music room that adds a little “fun” to the decor.

Designers at the fair also will be choosing their favorite finds to be featured at “Designers Discoveries.” Designers will sift through the thousands of antiques at the fair and choose their favorite item to be highlighted throughout the weekend. They will show how the piece can be used in a home and will be on hand to educate people about their chosen piece. At last year’s show Kaufman featured Dali dreamstone, one-of-a-kind, thin slabs of marble that can be used as pieces of art. She showed how to incorporate the dreamstone into a variety of different decorating styles from contemporary to transitional.

“(Antiques) have a commanding presence about them, so I typically incorporate antiques into my design when I’m looking for a piece that catches attention,” Kaufman said.

According to Kaufman, it’s all about bringing a conscious decision into the conscience of your environment. “You have to understand what a person’s needs are, what their environment is.” She first asks clients to go through a 10-page proprietary intake survey that gives her your archetype profile and explores whether or not you’re in balance with the five elements. If you’re dealing with a health issue or going through a strain in a personal relationship, for example, it might show through in your home.

“We think in a linear fashion, but this is circular and intertwining; there’s a unity of life,” Kaufman says. “The ultimate goal is to bring whatever you’re looking to accomplish into your conscious mind every day.”

Making Style Personal

When designing any space, Kaufman tries to put herself in that person’s shoes. “We have to become the client, if you will, and then create something that is a reflection of the client and what their life is about.”

She also wanted to transform it into a larger and more inviting, contemporary kitchen reminiscent of her Florida home.

Custom valances in Scalamandre trim, with a Duralee cotton sheer in a celadon color allow for a light, fresh look that is finished and inviting.”

“The client resides in Florida during the winter months. The addition of the sunroom has made her home here in Illinois a much more inviting and comfortable home. The client now looks forward to spring and summer in the Midwest and spends a great deal of time in this room!”

Interior decorator finds celebrity in job she loves

Joan Kaufman believes it’s what is on the inside that counts. The 46-year-old lifelong Naperville resident isn’t into therapy or counseling – her “inside” orientation is all about interior decorating, a lifelong passion she first discovered as a student when she took a course in the subject at the University of Illinois and fell in love with the field.

“This work was something that I loved from the start and wanted to make a part of my day-to-day life,” Kaufman said. “It was the perfect combination of art and business.”

Kaufman’s business, Interior Planning & Design, was first launched in 1990 in Wheaton. Eight years later, she moved to Winfield, and two years ago, she came to Naperville – moves that she said have made her more accessible to her customers.

These days, she finds her work fairly evenly split between commercial and residential jobs.

Celebrity status

One of her more prestigious projects in the former area has been to redecorate the headquarters of the Chicago Wolves hockey team in Glenview.
