"Master Suite
A new bedroom and bath on high can provide not only a
place to sleep but also a quite sanctuary. If you're
planning an attic master suite, consider adding dormers to
create extra headroom for a bath, walk-in closet, or small
exercise area. Knee walls can house a dressing table
arched window brings in much-needed light, and white trim
and tiles make the small room feel more spacious."

"Joan Kaufman wants two
'wows' when someone enters a room that she has decorated
and designed. 'The first 'wow,' anyone can get,' said
Kaufman, owner of Interior Planning and Design Inc. in
Winfield. 'It's that second 'wow,' after they're sitting
there, and notice the level of detail.'" |

"We had a space that no
longer worked for the family. So Kaufman and Wolande
discussed their options, such turning the space into a
gaming room, or perhaps some sort wine area. In the end,
they settled on the room's current incarnation: 'A very
traditional gentleman's room,' as Kaufman describes
it."
"'I just wanted someplace that made
everybody feel comfortable and you could enjoy a glass of
wine and a cigar,' Wolande says. 'I think it worked out
perfectly.'"
"'It's definitely my favorite
room in the house,' he says. 'I just love being there. You
sink into the chair, have a good glass of wine, watch a
sporting event - the atmosphere is conducive to
conversation and comfort'"
- Joan Kaufman designed this gentleman's
room for homeowner Chuck Wolande in the basement of his
St. Charles home.

Joan Kaufman, ASID, Interior Planning & Design in Winfield, Illinois, designed the rest of the room, which she entered into this year's Window Fashion Design Competition. "For our part, we did the original interiors of this home in 1993 and a complete update in 2000 to 2001," says Kaufman. "The goal for this room was to update the colors and to make a warm and cozy atmosphere. "

was to develop a master plan that would introduce a

completing the husband's
executive office in an Oakbrook Terrace Firm.

"As a designer
I am a trend setter not a trend follower."
--Joan Kaufman, Interior Planning and Design, Inc.,
Winfield
Nine years and three decorating projects
ago, Cherie Wardrop's friend recommended she call interior
designer Joan Kaufman. Kaufman is CEO of Winfield-based
Interior Planning and Design, Inc.
When they first got together, Wardrop was
living in a large, single-family home in Hinsdale in which
Kaufman played a role in the design and decoration. Now,
she and Kaufman are putting the final touches on a
two-bedroom, two-bath condominium just off North Michigan
Avenue along Chicago's Magnificent Mile.
In between, Kaufman assembled a temporary
apartment for Wardrop.

Meanwhile, interior
designer Joan Kaufman explored ways to enhance the natural
lighting and spacious feeling.
"We didn't want to impede
the visual flow of the space," she
says. "And it was specially crucial to not block
sunlight, particularly in Chicago, because we are starved
for sun."
Beaded-board wainscoting and a wide petal
sink create a "remodeled farmhouse feel,"
interior designer Joan Kaufman says. A small hotel-style
magnifying mirror is a clever solution for a wall too low
for a standard mirror.

"Ann has always loved Asian design, and
mixing this with the traditional and transitional pieces
helped give the home a more relaxing feel, said Kaufman,
whose company is Interior Planning and Design, based in
Winfield "We tried to bring
in the oriental without being overpowering. It's a little
eclectic"

Other outside
amenities include a formal garden patio with a fountain, a
pergola-covered privacy area, and built-in benches and
planters. "You can compare it to a house with many
rooms," says Joan Kaufman, an interior designer who
worked on the overall remodeling project.
"You have little spaces
that all are for different
things-a bathroom, a kitchen a hall closet. Here you have
the same kind of function, only it's outside." |

Joan Kaufman,
ASID, IIDA, principal of Interior design for the two-story
building, and special attention was paid to the impact
color would have on the overall design. The colorful glass
block, for instance, serves as a backdrop for the
receptionist's console desk in the entrance. The lighted
colors were achieved with color neon tubes, mounted on an
inner wall in a wave like pattern,, shining through the
glass block, encased in a Pitcon reveal system for
dramatic effect. The walls were finished in Polymyx for
durability and textural interest. |

It all started when
a client asked Kaufman to update his living room to create
a warmer, cozier, more upscale mood.
"We updated the family's furniture with
new upholstery from Pindler & Pindler, gave it a more
current look, introduced a huge mahogany hutch as a focal
point and replaced the plywood flooring with select
red oak in a herringbone pattern with a one-inch
walnut border all around,"
said Kaufman, the CEO of Winfield-based Interior Planning
& Design Inc. |

Many clients just want a little
advice and they're off shopping. "I had one client--I gave them a plan and they went
out to Home Depot and I never heard from them again," Kaufman recalls.
But then there are those people who hire designers to redo the whole house.
"I have clients who give me their keys and alarm codes when they're out
of town," Kaufman says. "I coordinate all the deliveries, and when they come
home, they have a house full of furniture." |

philosophy--something she describes as "two wows."

room a little while, he absorbs its content and the second
'wow' comes. ... It's the details that make all the
