House Beautiful
They are the brick-and-mortar aristocrats of campus- other-era mansions that (in some cases anyway) still shelter the sororities and fratenities of the University of Illinois. Recently, interior designer Joan Zeaske Kaufman '85 FAA, '85 ACES helped make over one of these aging grand dames- Alpha Gamma Delta, a castle-like house on Lincoln Avenue, there she herself lived as a sorority sister during her time at Illinois. As part of a $1 million redo of the building- since added to the National Registry of Historic Places- she awakened the classic charm of the interior with new wallpaper, paint, furniture, cabinets, and tile. Involved in the project by the sorority's building committee, Kaufman said she aimed for a look "like a little black dress that never goes out of style." Founder and head of Interior Planning & Design in Naperville, she is president of the Illinois chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers. |

Choose antique and know where to put it at fair
By ANGELA BENDER
For Sun-Times Media
Kaufman believes that antiques can be fabulous signature pieces that can add a "wow" to any room. Kaufman suggests, rather than packing a room full of antiques, have antiques interspersed among other pieces -- perhaps an antique side table or console in a family room or a piece used in a foyer or music room that adds a little "fun" to the decor.
Designers at the fair also will be choosing their favorite finds to be featured at "Designers Discoveries." Designers will sift through the thousands of antiques at the fair and choose their favorite item to be highlighted throughout the weekend. They will show how the piece can be used in a home and will be on hand to educate people about their chosen piece. At last year's show Kaufman featured Dali dreamstone, one-of-a-kind, thin slabs of marble that can be used as pieces of art. She showed how to incorporate the dreamstone into a variety of different decorating styles from contemporary to transitional.
"(Antiques) have a commanding presence about them, so I typically incorporate antiques into my design when I'm looking for a piece that catches attention," Kaufman said.

1. Clear clutter.
“Clutter represents chaos for many, so taking the time to clear the clutter allows for better energy flow in your home,” says Kaufman. She recommends spending time clearing the clutter from important areas such as the front entry way, kitchen, and major living spaces, since these areas tend to collect the most clutter.
Kaufman’s projects include commercial and residential projects. She recently became LEED accredited and is also a Registered Interior Designer.

Makeover of the Month:
Let the Sunshine In
Staff
The owner of this Naperville home wanted to let daylight into her circa 1945 kitchen and transform it onto a larger, more inviting and contemporary space, reminiscent of her Florida home. Working with the homeowner, Joan Kaufman of Interior Planning & Design, Inc. created a space with double the cabinet storage, and an island and peninsula bar area. The ceilings were raised and vaulted and a new maple veneer beam was added to match the cabinets below. Skylights and a new sunroom adjacent to the kitchen bathe the space in natural light.

Championship makeover
Jenn Danko
Glenview, IL
What's the difference between designing for the offices of a professional sports team versus your basic, run-of-the-mill business? Not much, says Joan Kaufman, principal interior designer and president of the Naperville-based Interior Planning & Design Inc. Kaufman's company took on the design challenge of outfitting a new look of the front operations offices for the American Hockey League's Chicago Wolves hockey team in spring 2008. Since completing the Glenview-based offices in August 2008, she says that one of the few interior design differences revolves around security.

Light: Let the Sunshine In
by Sheri O'Meara
Lighting Up and Old Kitchen and New Sunroom
When a Naperville, Ill., homeowner wanted to let the sunshine into her circa 1945 kitchen while making it more livable and work for aging in place, she turned to designer Joan Kaufman of Interior Planning. She also wanted to transform it into a larger and more inviting, contemporary kitchen reminiscent of her Florida home.
"We selected window treatments that filter glare but do not block light. Blinds (Hunter Douglas Modern Precious Metals Lightlines aluminum blinds) were selected for the skylights and can be adjusted to deflect glare and adjust the amount of light admitted any time the client desires. Custom valances in Scalamandre trim, with a Duralee cotton sheer in a celadon color allow for a light, fresh look that is finished and inviting."
"The client resides in Florida during the winter months. The addition of the sunroom has made her home here in Illinois a much more inviting and comfortable home. The client now looks forward to spring and summer in the Midwest and spends a great deal of time in this room!" |

Superior Interiors
by Megan Downey
According to Kaufman, it's all about bringing a conscious decision into the conscience of your environment. "You have to understand what a person's needs are, what their environment is." She first asks clients to go through a 10-page proprietary intake survey that gives her your archetype profile and explores whether or not you're in balance with the five elements. If you're dealing with a health issue or going through a strain in a personal relationship, for example, it might show through in your home.
"We think in a linear fashion, but this is circular and intertwining; there's a unity of life," Kaufman says. "The ultimate goal is to bring whatever you're looking to accomplish into your conscious mind every day."
Making Style Personal
When designing any space, Kaufman tries to put herself in that person’s shoes. “ We have to become the client, if you will, and then create something that is a reflection of the client and what their life is about."

Winter Home Improvement
One of the best projects to undertake over the winter is a bath remodeling project. It is a manageable size in most cases; it involves inside work; and can most likely be completed before spring or summer.
When embarking on a bathroom remodel, whether a do -it -yourself project, or a complete remodel with a contractor, retaining a consultation with a professional is a great investment. Most professionals offer one time consultations as well as full service design assistance and project management. This allows the client to select the level of expertise that fits their needs and budget. Enjoy the winter season and enter spring with a fresh new look!

Interior decorator finds celebrity in job she loves
By DAVID SHAROS Special to The Sun
Joan Kaufman believes it's what is on the inside that counts. The 46-year-old lifelong Naperville resident isn't into therapy or counseling - her "inside" orientation is all about interior decorating, a lifelong passion she first discovered as a student when she took a course in the subject at the University of Illinois and fell in love with the field.
"This work was something that I loved from the start and wanted to make a part of my day-to-day life," Kaufman said. "It was the perfect combination of art and business."
Kaufman's business, Interior Planning & Design, was first launched in 1990 in Wheaton. Eight years later, she moved to Winfield, and two years ago, she came to Naperville - moves that she said have made her more accessible to her customers.
These days, she finds her work fairly evenly split between commercial and residential jobs.
Celebrity status
One of her more prestigious projects in the former area has been to redecorate the headquarters of the Chicago Wolves hockey team in Glenview.

Paint Designs that Catch the Eye
October, 2008

|
Decorating can be done on a budget with some creative thinking and clever techniques to create affordable designs that are not only eye catching, but changeable in the future.
Selecting a color palette that works with the design of the room is a key factor. Both Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams will match any fabric sample or color you desire. From Professional Sport team logos, to creative designs with color blocks, a little masking tape and a good dose of patience is all that is needed to create the desired effect.
Naperville-based designer Joan Kaufman, ASID of Interior Planning & Design, Inc., uses sports themes and logos frequently in rooms for children and young people. Decals are available from many on-line bookstores.
