In the soaring two-story entry of a Barrington home, interior designer Joan Kaufman contrasted the architectural geometry of a sweeping double staircase with the combination of textures provided by a carpet with carved borders on the risers that lead down to a field of smooth ceramic tile set in a curved grout line. Kaufman is CEO of Winfield-based Interior Planning and Design.
