Joan Kaufman served as one of the Judges on a panel of designers for the 2013 Illinois Interior Design Awards

The project stood out among the entries not only for the aesthetically pleasing interplay of the architectural lighting and ceiling elements as well as the creation of individual spaces within the setting, but also the color palette, materials selection, and grid patterns in the rugs and bookcases.

The space incorporates a variety of lighting sources, suspended ceiling elements, and well- organized space that includes reading tables, browsing space, a cozy fireplace setting, and a reception desk where clients can obtain assistance and make purchases.

The bookshelves incorporate “windows” that open the space in an imaginative, clever way. There is ample seating with views to the outside. A significant contributing factor is that the bookstore is appealing to many who visit, and is well-integrated into the community and nearby architecture that surrounds it.
